Something that scares you

I photographed this fire hydrant I found on campus for this category. Two years ago my house was right in the middle of the Northern California Wildfires. My high school shut down and served as an evacuation safe space for two weeks. We were very lucky that the fire did not make it up to my hill, but I have a fear that someday it might.

Something beautiful

I snapped this picture of a monarch on a pink flower outside of Joan of Arc. I’ve always enjoyed how detailed a monarch’s wings are, and I liked the contrast of the pink and orange.

Something that makes me feel safe

For this, I took a picture of my close friend Sophia and Gia. I also noticed afterwards they are both wearing our sorority (Sigma Kappa) shirts, which the majority of my friends are in. Being with these people always make me feel safe.

Something familiar from a new angle

We are constantly surrounded by trees, but they look completely different from this angle. Standing at the base of the trunk makes us look minuscule compared to them.

Contrasting textures

These two plants were in the same pot, but I noticed how texturally different they were. The smoothness of the green large leaves that combines with the multicolored rigid ones caught my eye.

A close up

I chose this pink flower for my close up. As I got closer and zoomed in, I saw how detailed the center of the flower was. The tips of the pollen buds are red compared to the orange on the lower half if you look really closely.

Something that represents your dreams

I photographed Johnston Hall for this category. I dream of graduating from Marquette with a degree from the Diedrich College of Communication (mainly located in Johnston Hall)

The oldest thing you could find

I snapped a picture of the Church of the Gesu. Upon reading a plaque outside, I learned it opened it’s doors in 1894.

Something that reminds you of home

Being from Napa Valley, California it can be hard to find parts of home in Wisconsin. The afternoon light coming through these trees reminded of the golden hour rays that would shine through the grapevines in the summer.

Something that represents what I learned today

I photographed these leaves that I thought had interesting color and texture that were hidden in a corner of campus. Today I learned to look at details of things and to appreciate the hidden gems you can find just about anywhere.

A time capsule

For this category, I photographed the detailed door of the St. Joan of Arc Chapel. I think it is extremely fascinating that it was originally constructed in France in the 15th century. I feel like when I look at the door, I am also looking into the past.

The newest thing I could find

There are many more newer things I could have photographed, but for some reason I was thinking architecturally. Raynor was the newest building in my vicinity.

Get permission to photograph someone you don’t know

My classmate gave me permission to take his photo outside Joan of Arc. I reciprocated for him.

Pay attention for 60 seconds without distractions

I sat on a bench and watched a couple of bees pollinate these purple flowers for a minute. I liked their contrasting yet similar colors, so I snapped a photo.

Wild Card

My middle name is Rose, so I always feel compelled to take pictures of any rose bushes I run into. Pretty self explanatory!

Something on campus you have never noticed before

I saw this side door of Marquette Hall covered by trees and ivy and thought it was such a hidden gem. I also love how the light was illuminating the top half of the building.

Something that inspires you

Whenever I walk around campus, I feel extremely grateful to be here and to be getting a higher education. This photo of the Marquette Hall bell tower showcases how beautiful our campus is, and inspires me to keep striving to learn.
